Award-winning movie producer Barrie Kriel obtained a B.Com (Hon) (Accountancy) degree part-time from the University of Johannesburg in 1979 whilst completing his Chartered Accountancy Articles.

 

To develop a pre-school passion for film, theatre, drama & music, Barrie managed & administering Theatres, writing Advertising Copy & Short Dramas, completing a Diploma with the Academy for Dramatic Art while growing his skills in movie soundtrack design & engineering. His technical development included training at the S.A. Broadcast Corporation; Barrie soon launched his freelance career as a Sound Recorder & Mixer for Cinema & Television, doing all location recording, editing, studio recordings, voice & music microphone technique training of Artists, laying all tracks, and final mix for cinema & broadcast.

In 1984 he got his first break as 1st Assistant Director on King Solomon’s Mines under the tutelage of Spanish master 1st AD & 2nd Unit Director, Miguel Gil, starring Sharon Stone & Richard Chamberlain (directed by J. Lee Thomson). In between numerous TV Dramas & Commercials as 1st AD, Production Manager & Producer, he was appointed as 1st AD on Jock of the Bushveld 1986.

Over the years Barrie continued to develop his skills & knowledge in all departments of motion picture production, (including writing & delivering University Lectures), commercials, drama story development, screenplay, character structures, supervising all screenplay drafts, structuring legal & accounting modules, script analysis and breakdowns, budgeting & scheduling, complete pre-production, production & post production supervision through to final mix, delivery, marketing, release & distribution.

For official treaty Co-Productions and Local Productions:

  • Total budget of ZAR2.5million and upwards
  • 35% for the 1st ZAR6million
  • 25% for the remaining qualifying budget
  • Minimum of 50% and 2 weeks principal photography in South Africa
  • Maximum rebate ZAR 10million
